Weekend in Asheville

The Mister and I drove to Asheville for the weekend in hopes of finding a little bit of winter in the mountains. And that's just what we found -- even a little snow! It was chilly, but the views were breathtaking, and the Biltmore was everything I thought it would be and more. What a magnificent house! I've been on tours of preserved places before, but the Biltmore is on another level. Everything was so clean and well preserved, it felt almost...new. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw a couple of pictures of the interior (cameras weren't allowed inside, but I was sneaky with my iPhone a few times). The basement pool was my favorite. The entire room is covered in subway tile, all tiled by the same man who designed the New York City subways. The house was just fascinating, and I highly recommend the tour.

For the rest of the weekend, we did what we do best -- thrifting, drinking and eating. Asheville has some of the best thrift and antique shops, but my favorites were the Antique Tobacco Barn and Screen Door Antiques. Village Antiques was also amazing -- just a bit out of our price range, but they have so many European pieces that you almost feel like you're in a museum. We picked up several vinyl albums, a $1 mint condition 1962 game of Operation and lots of rare books. James was lucky we were in the Mini, because I saw lots of furniture that I would've died to call my own....

We ate like kings in Asheville -- our favorites were Tupelo Honey Cafe (Shrimp n' Grits!) and Books and Breadboard (Mile High Quiche!). Our other favorite spot was the Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar, where you can relax in a big leather chair with a glass of wine or coffee and leaf through thousands of books that are on shelves all around you. I would've stayed in there all day if I could.

All in all, it was a lovely weekend! How was yours?

  1. I LOVE Asheville. John and I went at the end of November. We went to the Biltmore while it was all lit up for Christmas. Definitely one of my favorite weekend getaways. I wanted to go to Tupelo Honey, but we got carried away at the Biltmore and ran out of time.

    Loved seeing your pictures!
