Road Trip Essentials

Let me be honest. I really, really don't like being in the car for extended periods of time. Which is why a lot of my friends cocked their heads in confusion when I said James and I were taking a road trip -- and I don't blame them. I complain when we're in a car for more than three hours going to the beach, much less driving six to eight hours at a time, for a week, driving from Georgia to Maine. So in the back of my mind, I had a few reservations.

But this was before we owned the magic that is the iPad. And before Fitz and the Tantrums was a band. There are a few items that made this road trip a breeze...and pretty darn enjoyable:

I recently discovered the most comfortable invention known to man: the travel pillow (a little late to the party on this one, I know. But they. are. amazing.). And getting lost for hours at a time inside the iPad didn't hurt, either. What would I do without Words with Friends, Instagram, Twitter and my Google Reader on-the-go? I don't want to know. And my husband really is the best company. After taking this trip, I love him so much more, and I didn't know that was even possible. So if I could add a #6 to this list of road trip necessities, it would definitely be James. Great company on a road trip is a must.

Other honorable mentions: a cozy poncho that doubles as a blanket (like this one), plenty of good music (our list includes the B52s, James Morrison, Clap Your Hands and the Fitz) and many, many trips to a local coffee house...or a good ol' fashioned Starbucks. (Side note: man oh man, New England peeps love them some Dunkin' Donuts! They were on every corner. I get it -- Dunkin' Donuts originated in Massachusetts -- but Starbucks will always get my vote. Especially during the fall -- pumpkin spice latte, I love you).

And there you have it. Road trip essentials, according to the Kilgores. Anything I left out that you like to take with you when you travel? What would be on your road trip playlist? I'd love to hear!

  1. I love that poncho! The perfect road trip accessory for sure! I just went to Vermont with an awesome Obey poncho that I'm in love with!
