To all the parents and potential parents out there:

When Randy Pausch was a kid, he decided he wanted to paint random things
on his bedroom walls. His father, enthused, his mother reluctant to agree, Randy,
his sister and his friend went to town, painting everything from the quadratic
formula to an elevator that went to the "3rd floor" (Randy lived in a one-story
ranch house), to writing "I'm trapped in the attic!" backwards on the ceiling.
Randy's advice to parents out there: "If your kids want to paint their bedrooms,
as a favor to me, let them do it. It'll be OK. Don't worry about resale value on
the house. I don't know how many more times I will get to visit my childhood
home. But it is a gift every time I go there. I still sleep in that bunk bed my
father built, I look at those crazy walls, I think about my parents allowing me
to paint, and I fall asleep feeling lucky and pleased." Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Well, I have a similar story, but mine involves going a little crazy with my mother's magazines one summer when I was 12 or 13. That summer I cut out everything that caught my eye and then taped them all to my bedroom walls, creating a wallpaper effect. My mom was always a big supporter of my creativity; she loved the idea and let me go at it. All my friends thought it was cool, (note the "modeling" photo of my friends in front of it below - ha!) and it served as a kind of "wall of inspiration" for me at the time. Anyway, the point is, I couldn't agree with Randy Pausch more. If your kids show an interest or passion about painting the walls, a certain piece of furniture, a car (I knew a girl in high school who painted her clunker!) - let them do it. It's a healthy outlet for their creativity!

Thanks, Mom! hehe :)

  1. lol - my walls looked like that, too. Only decidedly more 'rock-n-roll' (read: "punk," "goth").

  2. That last picture makes me more happy than you can know! hah! I love it- Great idea Natty!
